Workshop 1

Infrared Window Jump-Start &
Installation Training

Description

Infrared windows facilitate closed panel inspection of energized electrical applications. Because cabinets remain closed, the use of infrared windows helps companies to eliminate the increased risk of triggering an arc flash during an inspection, thereby facilitating safer, more efficient thermographic electrical surveys. The 2009 edition of NFPA 70E allows for “reduced levels of PPE” for thermographers using infrared windows, and they are fast becoming the industry standard for electrical thermography.

You may be asking "Where do I put IR windows? What will I see? How many will I need for my applications? What do OSHA and NFPA say? What are the best practices for installation and baselining?"

The IRISS Jump-Start and Installation Training will condense more than 14 years of practical field experience and countless successful IR window installations and program launches to answer all of these questions and more. It will give you the tools you will need to start a successful electrical preventive maintenance program (per NFPA 70B) using infrared windows.

Learning outcomes

This course will enable you to:

  • Understand OSHA and NFPA implications on use of infrared windows
  • Understand Field Of View (FOV) implications of using infrared windows
  • Decide the quantity and placement of IR windows in your applications
  • Confidently install IR windows in standard switchgear cabinets and other applications
  • Understand what you will “see” through an IR window
  • Decide which applications are the most critical to fit with infrared windows
  • Understand the importance of emissivity standardization
  • Calculate & compensate for transmission rate attenuation through an IR window
  • Collect accurate data with your infrared imager while using an infrared window
  • Properly baseline, document and label your applications for increased accuracy, safety and efficiency
  • Make your processes repeatable and reproducible (for ISO considerations)

Intended audience

The materials presented in this course are intended for managers, contractors, and in-house thermographers and technicians who wish to implement or sustain an infrared electrical survey program using IR windows.
