Workshop 2

Infrared Surveying of CMU (Concrete Block) Walls

Description

It is easy to find buildings that are constructed using CMU (Concrete Masonry Unit) walls. Buildings such as malls, strip shopping centers, retail buildings, schools, houses and many other buildings are constructed using concrete block walls. These walls are used as inside walls and outside walls because they are erected quickly, have relative low construction costs, high load-bearing capabilities, good fire ratings, and are very versatile. With a wide range of densities, colors, decorative outer faces and treatment options, CMU is a popular method of wall construction.

By using an infrared imager and some simple techniques, infrared thermographers can offer the building owner, architect, engineer, general contractor, and masonry contractors a cost-effective means of commissioning the building with regards to the structure integrity, insulation compliance, and moisture content.

Learning outcomes

This course will enable you to:

  • understand construction of CMU walls
  • comprehend theory of applying thermal imaging to CMU walls
  • select appropriate thermal imaging equipment
  • determine proper vantage point for imaging
  • identify optimal weather and site conditions for imaging
  • properly document findings
  • utilize thermal imaging as a cost-effective inspection technique to help ensure structural integrity of finished CMU walls

Intended audience

The materials presented in this workshop are intended for infrared thermography contractors, architects, structural engineers, building contractors, and masonry contractors who wish to utilize thermal imaging as a quality assurance tool for inspecting CMU walls
